Charles Wayne Rickman, age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday March 10, 2023, at his home. Services will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Kellner, on Thursday, March 16th with visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 am, and the service to follow.
Charles was born at home, on March 25, 1936, to Elmer and Agnes (Whipple) Rickman. He was the eldest of 6 children. He was a lifelong resident of Kellner, Wisconsin. He was employed by the Biron Division of Consolidated Papers Inc. and retired after 43 years. He met his bride to be Darlene (Ebbe) Rickman, while working at the papermill. Darlene would say that every time he saw her, he winked, so she finally agreed to go on a date with him.
Charles and Darlene married on July 26, 1958, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kellner, and went on to have 3 daughters. They were also blessed to assist in raising their eldest grandson Kevin, whom they thought of as a son. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before Darlene’s death, in November 2022.
Charles was a hardworking, loyal, and honest man. In addition to his job at the mill, he was also a school bus driver for Safeway Bus Transit. After retiring from Consolidated Papers, he re-entered the workforce for the Town of Grant, where his favorite job was plowing snow. However, his true love was farming, and his Percheron draft horses. He always made time to help a farmer or friend in need. According to his kids, he could literally fix or repair anything. If he couldn’t find the part he needed, he'd figure out how to make one. Sunday mornings were spent with a cup of coffee, listening to polka music, while he and Darlene tapped along to the beat.
Charles and Darlene were members of St. John Lutheran Church in Kellner, where they attended the Saturday night service for many years. When their health no longer allowed them to attend, they would watch the recorded service on Sunday night television.
Charles is survived by daughters Brenda (Noel) Hubler, Lori (Rodney) Price and Dawn West. Eleven grandchildren Kevin (Anna) Rickman, Tavina Anderson, C J (Jenah) Rickman, Tyler (bride to be Kenzie) Rickman, Craig (Megan) Rickman, Rana (Danny) DelMatto, Noah Rickman, Erin (Kris) Duplissey, Jayme (Rob) Farrin, Katrina West, Ryan (Truely) West and 20 great-grandchildren. Sisters Judith (Lawrence) Shepard, Jane (William) Binnebose, brother Gerald (Pat) Rickman, and sister-in-law Mavis Ebbe. He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene, parents Elmer and Agnes Rickman, brother Ron, sister Joyce Elaine, stepfather Robert (PopPop) Staples, mother and father-in-law Dorothy and Victor Ebbe, and brother-in-law Robert Ebbe.
The family would like to thank his caregiver Laurie for her dedication in caring for both Charles and Darlene, caregiver Bonnie for reciting the Lord’s Prayer with Charles on Friday morning, Compassus Hospice, and all the family and friends, who spent countless hours assisting and checking on them these past few months.
