Mae Knuth passed away of natural causes on January 23, 2021.
A funeral service for Mae Knuth will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 30, 2021, at First English Lutheran Church, 440 Garfield Street, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.
Mae was born on October 29, 1926 on her grandparents’ farm in Northland, Wisconsin. To capitalize on the growing interest in automobiles, Mae’s parents moved the family, first to Wittenberg-Birnamwood and later to Wisconsin Rapids, where they owned a service/gas station. Mae started grade school in Wisconsin Rapids and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945.
Mae started working as a hairdresser and later became a secretary at Mid-State Technical College. She married Gerhardt Knuth at First English Lutheran Church in 1954, and was a homemaker thereafter. Gary and Mae had four children. In 1978, Gary and Mae bought a cabin near Woodruff, WI. The cabin became a wonderful gathering place for family and friends, and Mae maintained it for almost 30 years after Gary’s untimely death in 1980.
Mae had a lifelong love of music. Before her marriage, Mae was a member of the Choralaires, a women’s quartet. Later she sang with the Sweet Adelines group. She and Gary enjoyed many years singing in the First English Lutheran Church Choir.
Mae enjoyed golf, sewing, bowling and playing bridge. She was a member of Sons of Norway, the Sarah Circle at First English Lutheran Church, and the Hospital Auxiliary. She formed many lifelong friendships pursuing her activities. One of Mae’s biggest passions was traveling with other widows. She loved the camaraderie involved in countless trips to Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean, as well as numerous beautiful destinations in the United States.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband Gary, parents Carl and Inga Rued, brother Gerald Rued, sister-in-law Margaret Rued, brother-in-law William Matthews, and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Eunice Matthews, her children Sheila (William) Swarick; Sherri (Ross Turner) Knuth, St. Paul, MN; Steven (Carol) Knuth, Green Bay; and Scott (Sharon) Knuth Bloomington, MN; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mae’s family is grateful for the close relationships with Gary’s family and extended family during his life and after his death, including the families of Barbara Matsumoto, Shirley (Devon) Saeger, Joyce (William) Kauth, Irene (Henry) Acott, and Donald (Lois) Knuth.
Mae’s children appreciate the staff at Arborwood Lodge and Heartland Hospice who provided kindness and care for Mae in the past few years.
