Ronald V. “Abe” Markworth, 88, went to meet His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Aspirus Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids, with his loving family by his side.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, June 4, 2021, at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until the time of services at the church. Rev. Kevin Ader and Rev. Gary Markworth will officiate. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Entombment will be in Forest Hill Mausoleum.

Ron was born on March 18, 1933, to Victor A. and Sophia A. (Bartz) Markworth in the town of Cecil, WI. His first eight years were spent there while his parents ran the community store. The family moved to Wisconsin Rapids in 1941. Ron attended Immanuel Lutheran School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951.

In high school, Ron played trombone in concert band and in the “Swing Shifters” Dance Band which played for many school functions. He was also in the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. At Lincoln, he met the love of his life, Donna Plowman. They were united in marriage on June 12, 1954, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids. They were blessed with over 59 years of marriage until Donna passed away on November 22, 2013.

Ron worked in various capacities for Consolidated Papers, Inc. including in the yard, lab, as Timekeeper, and Materials Supply Clerk. He joined the Purchasing Department in 1966 and remained there as a Buyer until his retirement in 1996. Ron also served as President of the Employee Benefit Association (EBA) in the early 60’s. In addition, he worked part-time at Fisher’s Mobil and Ole Arneson’s Citgo gas stations.

Ron served on the Board of Directors of UCP of North Central Wisconsin and volunteered many hours on various committees at Immanuel. After retirement, he enjoyed golfing at Tri-City with his almost life-long friend, Cecil. Abe enjoyed nothing better than “taking a ride” anywhere!

The family spent many memorable times camping locally, throughout the Midwest, and out East.  Favorite family trips included traveling to Gettysburg and Hershey, PA; Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon, Monticello; and the UP of Michigan with the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinac Island. Later, they would enjoy spending time at a cottage near Mercer with family and friends.

Being an avid Packer Backer, Ron enjoyed attending many games both in Green Bay and Milwaukee, as well as some out of state games. He also spent many hours cheering on the Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers.

Time spent with family was cherished. Most of all, he was there to support and encourage his children in their activities. That love and support continued with the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many a ride was taken to watch them play and perform, graduate, and marry.

Ron taught his children the value and importance of having a living faith in Jesus Christ, hard, honest work; and being truthful to each other. Two of his favorite quotes were: “You can go to hell for lying as easy as anything else!” and “Love your job and you will never regret going to work!”

Ron is survived by his children: Rev. Gary (Paula) Markworth and their children: Shane (Shannon), Matt (Kendra), and Chad (Charity Carney); Cheryl (Duane) Spinler and their children: Candace (Aaron) Slattery, Casey (Frank) Fischer, and Caity Spinler; and Greg (Kris) Markworth and their children: Drew (Courtney Holub), Ben (Sydney), and Erin; Son-in-law George (Jean) Krug and his children: Jen Melville, Renee (David) Wilson, Eric (Emily) Krug, and stepchildren Kristy (Doug) Cravillion and Rich (Kristen) Tessler and their children; 14 great-grandchildren, Ellie Ann and Braxton Markworth; Brooke, Sarah, and Hannah Markworth; Jacob Markworth; Dexter and Ruth Fischer; Cohen and Clayton Melville; Makenna and Dylan Wilson; Eliana and Brynlee Krug; as well as brothers-in-law Ron (Amy) Plowman and Doug (Jane) Plowman; sister-in-law Marilyn Foley; nephews and nieces Jay Plowman, Brian (JoAnna) Plowman, Shawn Foley, Kari (Andrew) Lane, Christine (Chad) Kuehl; great niece/nephews and many friends.

Ron was preceded in death by his wife Donna; daughters, Cynde Krug and Heather Markworth; his parents Victor and Sophia, in-laws Donald and Dorothy Plowman, brother-in-law Michael Foley, grandparents-in-law Allen and Bertha Mackaben and Gustave and Mary Plowman.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial gifts to St. John’s Lutheran Church Radio Broadcast in Pittsville, or the charity of your choice.

Ron’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to granddaughter Caity for being Grandpa Abe’s right hand gal, always ready to help him with whatever he needed; to Aspirus Riverview CCU, Aspirus Wound Care, Dr. Roenius, Immanuel Lutheran Church friends, and Renaissance Assisted Living for their exceptional care and kindness.
